SICAPERMA

SICAPERMA offers the first specialisation area where Less Developed Regions can become the leaders in EU Resilience: Nd-Fe-B Recycling Technologies. SICAPERMA will build a tech-based value chain that does currently not exist in Europe and will do so by tapping into less developed regions’ uncovered tech capabilities. To that end we will implement 3 collaborative demonstration pilots reaching market scale (in Permanent Magnet (PM) not driven by same volumes than other low-end metals but with much higher economic leverage).

These will be focused on Demonstrating:

1. Multi-stream PM dismantling and processing
2. Innovative Sintered and Bonded PM Production from recycled material
3. Innovative integration of recycled magnets in strategic EU applications (motors, etc.).

These will be connected for the first time into a full interregional EU demonstration ecosystem. A stop on Chinese exports would end 98% of EU supply, putting a stop to green (wind energy, electric mobility…) and digital (hard drive, appliance, etc.) transitions. PM Recycling is the first Tech Area critical to leading EU value chains where Less Developed and Transition Regions can become Leaders. Thanks to our breakthrough, we will be able to organize the replication of PM recycling capabilities over Less Developed and other EU regions with a 2050 target of 21 plants.

Our ambition by then will be to achieve €1.8 billion in revenues will be generated, with a net margin of nearly €280 million; and generate 5.900 direct jobs, not even counting indirect employment – all to address EU resilience, green and digital transitions. This should amount to a wide range of environmental impacts, among which 95 million tons of CO2 savings.

TECOS’s role:

SICAPERMA will dedicate serious resources to 1/ structuring the first EU-wide PM recycling value chain and 2/ scaling up our Pilots to expand across EU Regional Ecosystems. WP5 is therefore devoted to pan-EU ecosystem building and accelerating the expansion and replication of SICAPERMA demonstrators. We will thus aim to:

• Develop a PM EoL strategy and policy recommendations based on a sound analysis of EU regulation and framework conditions
• Structure the SICAPERMA pan-EU ecosystem along a newly created PM Recycling value chain and underlying strategy
• Accelerate the interregional deployment of SICAPERMA business cases to other EU Regions
• Engage funders to invest in SICAPERMA replications in other EU regions
• Build technical but also business and financial capacity within EU regions – with a particular flagship on Less Developed Regions
