A Revolution for Dog Lovers and the Planet: BioSTARCHew – Slovenia’s First Biodegradable Chew Bone

With the BioSTARCHew product, Slovenia joins the pioneers of sustainable solutions in the pet product sector. BioSTARCHew is the first industrially compostable interactive chew bone for dogs, developed within the project of the same name and co-funded by the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport (MGTŠ) and the European Union under the NextGenerationEU mechanism. It represents a breakthrough innovation in sustainable pet products and is the first solution of its kind to be fully developed, tested, and certified in Slovenia.

BioSTARCHew is an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional plastic chew toys. It is made from industrially compostable polymers PLA and PBS, a starch-based filler, and pea husks sourced as a by-product from Katić Milling, supporting the principles of the circular economy. The product contains no artificial flavors, colorants, flavor enhancers, or toxic additives, ensuring a high level of safety for both dogs and the environment. Additional value is provided by thoughtfully designed interactive features that allow treats to be inserted, encouraging active play, mental stimulation, and longer engagement for dogs. BioSTARCHew combines sustainability, functionality, and animal well-being in a modern next-generation product.

Certified Industrially Compostable Product

The material composition of BioSTARCHew underwent a comprehensive industrial compostability and biodegradability testing process. Based on successful testing, the product received:

  • a Declaration of Conformity with the SIST EN 13432:2001 standard,
  • the officially registered ICP INDUSTRIAL COMPOSTABLE label, confirming the industrial compostability of the materials used.

During testing, the sample achieved 90% biodegradation within just four months under industrial composting conditions, significantly exceeding the minimum requirements of the standard. An additional ecotoxicity test confirmed that the degradation residues are completely harmless to plants and the environment.

A Comprehensive Development Process From Idea to Certified Innovation

The development was led by TECOS – Slovenian Tool and Die Development Centre, which designed and implemented:

  • the final 3D design of the chew bone,
  • the injection mould optimized for compostable materials,
  • the production of prototypes and test series,
  • technical and functional validation of the final product.

The development process included rheological material analyses, optimization of polymer ratios and starch filler with pea husks, as well as mechanical strength, load, and durability testing under prolonged chewing conditions. Special attention was given to product safety: the geometry of the bone is designed to prevent fragmentation into small parts during use, significantly reducing risk for dogs.

In cooperation with the strategic partner TAČKA Veterinary Clinic and Pet Store, a specialized provider of pet products, the BioSTARCHew team plans to expand distribution in the next phase and gradually introduce the product to Slovenian and international retail chains.

Proven Lowest Environmental Impact Among Comparable Products

Independent LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and LCC (Life Cycle Cost) analyses confirmed the significant environmental and cost advantages of BioSTARCHew compared to analyzed synthetic plastic alternatives.

Lowest Environmental Impact

  • BioSTARCHew demonstrates the lowest emissions and environmental burden across its entire life cycle, significantly lower than comparable biopolymer or nylon dog chew bones.
  • The largest share of environmental impact arises from raw material sourcing, while the impact of industrial composting is negligible.
  • Nylon chew bones generate the highest emissions, as they require energy-intensive incineration after use.

Lowest Life Cycle Costs

  • BioSTARCHew proved to be the most cost-effective solution over its entire life cycle among the analyzed alternatives.
  • Production represents the largest share of costs, followed by material and transport costs.
  • Industrial composting costs are minimal compared to the disposal costs of nylon products.

Ready for Market Entry

BioSTARCHew represents a new generation of sustainable pet products, combining interactivity, safety, biodegradability, and Slovenian innovation. With technically validated results, certifications, and proven sustainability advantages, the product is ready for market entry.

TECOS and TAČKA, together with MLIN KATIĆ, invite distributors, retail chains, and business partners to collaborate in the commercialization of Slovenia’s first industrially compostable dog chew bone—an innovation that delights pets while reducing the burden on the planet.

BioSTARCHew marks an important milestone in Slovenian sustainable innovation: a product that respects nature, brings joy to dogs, and opens new pathways for the development of biodegradable materials in the pet industry.
